Presentations of reports to the Fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Bosnia and Herzegovina

On 10 December 2024, the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina marked International Human Rights Day with representatives of authorities, civil society organizations, the diplomatic community and international organizations. The event included presentations of reports to the Fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Human Rights Ombudsman institution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, civil society organizations, the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Bosnia and Herzegovina will take place on Wednesday, 29 January, from 9:00 to 12:30, in Geneva. The review will be webcast live.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of 14 States to be reviewed by the United Nations Human Rights Council from 20 to 31 January 2025. The first, second and third UPR of Bosnia and Herzegovina took place in February 2010, November 2014, and November 2019 respectively. What is the Universal Periodic Review?

The UPR is a unique global process which involves the review of the human rights record of all United Nations Member States every 4,5- 5 year. It provides an opportunity for all States to present the measures they have taken to improve the human rights situation in their countries and to overcome challenges to the enjoyment of human rights by all. The ultimate goal of the UPR is the improvement of the human rights situation in every country. Each UPR leads to recommendations addressed to the State under review to improve the situation of human rights. 

Who conducts the review?

The reviews are conducted by the UPR Working Group which consists of the 47 Member States of the Human Rights Council. However, any UN Member State can take part in the discussion/dialogue with the States under review. 

What are the reviews based on?

The documents on which the reviews are based are: 1) information provided by the State under review in the form of a “national report”; 2) information contained in reports of United Nations human rights mechanisms (Special Procedures, human rights treaty bodies) and other United Nations entities; 3) information from other stakeholders including national human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations, and regional organizations.
