United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bosnia and Herzegovina visits Bratunac, discusses municipal sustainable development and ensuring a safe environment for all
25 January 2022
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Dr. Ingrid Macdonald, visited Bratunac today, meeting with Mayor Srđan Rankić, the Women’s Forum Bratunac and representatives from the associations “Maja” Kravica and 'Priroda' Bratunac.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator and Mayor Rankić discussed the current development situation in the Municipality, as well as programs supported by the United Nations team in the wider Birač region. Local development strategy aligned with the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Framework in BiH was highlighted as an important means for promoting inclusive and green economic development, as well as strengthening social protection services to ensure no one is left behind. Improving water and sanitation systems, health and infrastructure, as well opportunities for small and medium agriculture and tourism enterprises were also discussed.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Macdonald emphasized that the most prosperous communities provide for the well-being and safety of all people. Acting upon all forms of discrimination and hatred, and taking measures to prevent repetition are therefore important to avoid destabilizing risks.
Acts of intimidation and hate speech, such as the ones seen a few weeks ago across BiH, are an affront to survivors of atrocity crimes and their families, including those who returned to their homes after the conflict.
During meetings with representatives of the Women’s Forum Bratunac and the associations “Maja” Kravica and 'Priroda' Bratunac, the need to strengthen the inclusion of women in decision-making was highlighted, including localizing the principles of the women, peace and security agenda. Challenges and opportunities for economic empowerment of women and youth were also discussed, including their participation in gender responsive budgeting in collaboration with the Municipality and investment in small and medium enterprises led by women.
The United Nations team in Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to support activities which advance the Sustainable Development Goals and enhance mutual respect within and between communities across the country, including in Bratunac and the wider area.
