UN in Bosnia and Herzegovina Calls for Urgent Action Following Femicide in Mostar

18 November 2025

The United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina expresses profound sorrow at the recent femicide committed in Mostar. We express deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim.

This tragedy adds to a devastating pattern in which more than 35 women have been killed in Bosnia and Herzegovina over the past two years. No society can speak of progress while women’s most fundamental rights – to life, freedom, and safety – remain at risk. Femicide, the most extreme form of violence against women, is not inevitable; it is preventable. It requires rapid and effective institutional action, especially in cases involving repeat offenders. Each day without decisive measures increases the risk that another life will be lost.

These repeated tragedies show that more must be done, and with urgency. On the eve of the global campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we call on BiH authorities to prioritize the prevention of and response to gender-based violence, including domestic violence, by ensuring: an immediate and coordinated reaction to every report of danger; rigorous risk assessments and timely protection measures, especially in cases involving known perpetrators; consistent accountability for offenders; and sustainable financing of safe houses, SOS helplines and specialized support services.

Survivors of violence, as well as those who witness or suspect violence, have the right to seek protection and support from institutional mechanisms, including SOS helplines, safe houses, centres for social work, healthcare institutions, and the police. These institutions carry a legal obligation to act and to provide protection, and strengthening their capacity and accountability is critical to strengthening trust and saving lives.

The United Nations remain fully committed to working with and supporting authorities at all levels, as well as civil society and other partners, to help build a safer and more just society in which all women and girls can live free from violence.
